What it is: Intelligent Workload Management (IWM) is a managed availability capability in MongoDB Atlas 9.0 that keeps clusters responsive and predictable even under overload. IWM queues transient traffic spikes, keeps short-running operations moving and long-running operations stable, and protects cluster health with no application changes required. For sustained overload, customers can optionally enable Load Shedding to actively reject excess work. IWM is activated by default across all eligible Atlas 9.0 clusters at no extra charge.

Who it's for: IWM is an essential protection feature for Atlas clusters, which is why it's on by default in Atlas 9.0 on eligible clusters at no additional cost. Why it matters: Overload events often unfold faster than infrastructure can scale. Even with auto-scaling enabled, provisioning additional capacity takes time, and in the gap between a traffic spike and new capacity coming online, a cluster can become unstable if every request is treated the same way and clients retry aggressively. IWM closes that gap by preserving cluster health, optimizing performance, and turning what would be an unpredictable outage into a controlled, observable event. With auto-scaling enabled, IWM acts as a bridge until scale-up completes; with auto-scaling disabled, it maintains stability for the provisioned capacity and degrades predictably rather than collapsing.
