Serverless Multi-region: When is it coming?

Hi,

I saw a previous thread - Serverless Instance Limitations; Multiø-region

this thread was created in Nov '22. I wanted to know if there is going to be a feature rollout for this anytime soon?

Hi Dev

We do not have any near-term plans to support Multi-region on Serverless. You can use our Dedicated offering for multi-region functionality. Is there a reason you’d prefer to do multi-region on Serverless vs. on Dedicated?

@Anurag_Kadasne I would imagine that being pretty obvious. If we are a startup and don’t have much traffic and want to give our users the best experience in terms of latency and redundancy globally with multi region read/writes then multi region serverless atlas would be perfect. I actually can’t believe you needed to ask the question.

You are proposing dedicated which costs 100s per month in fixed costs regardless of traffic. Mongo dedicatted is not an option for most startups. We have decided to self host couchdb globally which gives us the same offline online sync functionality as atlas but we can control the sizing and distribute our workloads globally close to our users and then use cockroachdb for our global serverless strongly consistent sql worklows. We managed all this because its scalable for us to start on. Mongo isn’t, I wish it was.

You have lost many potential clients and profitable businesses who would have locked into your platform if you had offered Atlas as a multi region varient that’s scale to zero. Instead we have to pay 1000s of dollars in fixed cost to keep multi region clusters running regardless of traffic. You lost an early customer, and the potential lifetime value of having us on board from the start. We won’t be migrating over as we’re buying into our techstack now.
