Bridging legacy systems and real-time iGaming performance

The online gambling, or iGaming, market operates in a complex, fast-moving, and highly dynamic environment. Games need to balance performance with flexibility, managing frequent high-volume concurrent user access; fast and consistent data synchronization is crucial, and lags or inconsistencies can damage consumer trust.

The paradox, explains Steven Batchelor-Manning, co-founder of iGaming development specialist ScatterKings, is that the systems that have to deliver this performance are often behind the curve.

“A lot of online gambling providers use aging technology,” says Batchelor-Manning. “As an industry, it’s a little like banking in that it doesn’t upgrade unless it has to, and the technology starts to fall very far behind.”

ScatterKings was founded with a vision to redefine iGaming through performance-driven innovation — delivering high-quality, engaging content powered by cutting-edge technology, while upholding the highest standards of financial, regulatory, and ethical responsibility.

“We wanted to build a type of premium product that isn’t actually available in our industry,” Batchelor-Manning adds. “We also wanted to develop a new approach to the industry and use our knowledge and experience to turn it around.”

Successfully managing fast and flawless interactions between end users and a range of servers and databases is critical to success, especially in time-critical applications such as hold-and-spin games.

“Imagine you’ve clicked ‘spin’ on one of those games. Before the reels stop spinning, we have not only the round trip between us and the player, but between us and the customers servers checking, with a lot of critical bookkeeping,” says Batchelor-Manning. “We need response times of less than 0.1 seconds, and that demands really strong performance from your database.”

OUR SOLUTION

The power behind complex and demanding technology

It was an issue that Batchelor-Manning first encountered at a previous role in a similar company, and it was here that he discovered MongoDB.

“We’d always used the Microsoft toolstack and SQL Server. Anything else was seen as off limits; changing just wasn’t an option,” Batchelor-Manning explains. “But I’ve always believed in using the right tool for the right job, so I started looking at MongoDB for some smaller side projects.”

The difference was astonishing. The levels of raw performance that MongoDB delivered were a significant step forward, and were achievable without having specialist database engineers and architects permanently on hand.

“If you’re a team of developers that wants to move fast, having to constantly summon the shamans of the database technology is a huge bottleneck,” says Batchelor-Manning. “You just want to get on with it.”

The initial success led to a complete rebuilding of the company’s technology stack based on MongoDB. It delivered quick and impressive results in terms of onboarding costs, performance availability, and ease of operation.

“It got to a point where I was wondering if I’d missed something obvious,” Batchelor-Manning recalls. “But there were no problems there at all. MongoDB just delivered.”

So when Batchelor-Manning set up ScatterKings in 2022, the choice of database to manage critical workloads was simple. MongoDB offered the crucial mix of scalability, rapid deployment, reliability, and ease of use for ScatterKings’ small but highly agile development function.

“The most demanding and complex technology we had to develop is our Remote Gaming System (RGS), which is what all the games communicate with when you’re playing,” he says. “It’s 500,000 lines of code, and even a few milliseconds of problems in there can blow up into tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros in extra costs. That’s why we chose MongoDB Atlas as the database that sits underneath it.”

OUTCOME

Outstanding speed, power, and reliability

MongoDB’s flexible data model now enables developers without deep database specialization to build and iterate complex games rapidly. Development schedules that typically took several months can now be completed in weeks, giving ScatterKings a critical competitive advantage.

“MongoDB enables a critical trifecta of not only delivering great content, but delivering it fast and with confidence in its foundation and quality,” says Batchelor-Manning. “We’ve also stood up to some pretty incredible growth in traffic, but it’s not even scratching the surface of MongoDB’s capabilities.”

MongoDB Atlas also delivers consistent and strong performance, supporting ScatterKings’ need for reliable, real-time operations, even during dramatic and sometimes unpredictable spikes in traffic. Infrastructure deployment is equally impressive, with ScatterKings able to spin up new data centers in hours instead of months, and with no operational disruption.

“We recently live-migrated our primary European production database between countries,” says Batchelor-Manning. “MongoDB allowed us to migrate with zero downtime, zero issues, zero stuttering, and zero latency, even with players still hitting the database with full force. It’s one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in technology.”

MongoDB’s outstanding performance in terms of speed, power, and reliability are, for Batchelor-Manning, key factors that give ScatterKings a critical advantage in a demanding environment.

“MongoDB allows us to get to market at least 50% faster than we would otherwise manage,” he adds. “It gives us confidence that we don’t need to continuously have to re-engineer things. Whatever you write with MongoDB, you only have to write it once.”

And as ScatterKings moves into regional markets outside Europe the scalability and support provided by MongoDB will continue to enable its exponential growth.

“The fact that we can have new capacity in place so quickly with MongoDB is paramount,” Batchelor-Manning concludes. “It’s the most important part of our infrastructure, and the one I know will always have our back.”
