How MongoDB's Australian Teams Are Shaping the Future of Data

March 6, 2026 ・ 5 min read

At MongoDB, we don’t just build cutting-edge technology—we build careers, communities, and a culture where people thrive. Our mission is to empower innovators and that starts with empowering our people.

Headquartered in New York, our company has offices spanning the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. We currently employ more than 5,600 people globally, with roughly 20% of our total employees based in the Asia-Pacific region.

Our Australian team has been primarily based out of offices in Sydney and Melbourne since MongoDB opened shop here in 2012. In this spotlight, team members share their personal experiences and insight into what life is like at MongoDB in Australia.

Working at MongoDB Sydney is an experience like no other

When you step into MongoDB, you’re not just joining a tech company. You’re joining a global community that thrives on innovation, collaboration, and growth. Our office captures the essence of MongoDB’s culture while embracing local character—and that includes stunning 360-degree views of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline from the 38th floor.

“Our workplace operations team is dedicated to creating office spaces that feel inspiring and welcoming, ensuring employees have everything they need to do their best work,” said Isha, workplace manager for the Sydney office. “From wellness initiatives to events that bring people together, this team goes beyond operations—they build community.”

6 reasons why our team loves working here:

Wellness comes first: From subsidized Medibank health coverage, dental, and vision care, to ClassPass discounts and Headspace subscriptions, we support your physical and mental well-being.

Family and flexibility: Eligible employees enjoy 24 weeks of paid parental leave, fertility and family planning support through Carrot, and Cleo resources for parenting. Our flexible work model means you never have to choose between career and family.

Financial security: We offer life insurance, income protection, and the chance to grow wealth through our employee stock purchase plan.

Time for you: Every employee enjoys 25 days of annual leave, plus extra wellness initiatives like MongoDB Bloom (our internal wellness program), midday meditation sessions, and fun in-office perks.

Growth and development: You’ll have access to dedicated learning programs, technical training and leadership development to upskill in programming, leadership, communication, and more.

Inclusion and community: Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) like MDBWomen, Queer Collective, and Veterans create safe spaces for connection, inclusion, and growth.

Don’t just take it from us: hear from members of the team

Seemi, a technical services engineer, has found that support and development goes both ways at MongoDB.

MongoDB is the most supportive, encouraging environment where I’ve worked. People truly empower each other to think big, take on challenges, and grow. It’s a culture built on trust, collaboration, and ownership, where individual ambition thrives alongside team success.

When I interviewed with MongoDB, I was struck by how every conversation reflected a genuine, positive culture. And as a mother of two returning to the workforce after a long career break, I was nervous. The team at MongoDB quickly erased that fear, hiring based on skills and ambition—not gaps.

I get continuous support in my day-to-day responsibilities and have the chance to make a real impact. In post-sales technical services, my team supports customers when it matters most: helping them succeed on MongoDB Atlas. We’re on the front line, building confidence in our products and driving long-term success. All of this, as well as being supported in my day-to-day responsibilities and having the chance to make a real impact, is what happily keeps me in my role.

While I’m helping customers succeed, MongoDB helps me succeed. My team has dedicated time each week for learning, I’ve completed trainings in Python and Linux, and have earned all MongoDB certifications. I’ve also improved my public speaking and taken company-sponsored leadership courses. This commitment to growth has led to two Outstanding Contributor awards, a promotion, and countless confidence-boosting opportunities.

Staya, a senior software engineer, reflects on the global impact our teams in Australia make and how colleagues have become friends.

In 2021, MongoDB made a bold decision to invest in modernizing legacy applications and aid customers migrating from relational databases to MongoDB. That decision sparked the creation of a new R&D team in Sydney—and the chance to tackle some of the most complex engineering challenges in the industry.

Today, that small team has grown into a global department solving multiple novel, high-impact problems. Our team owns MongoDB’s data migration solutions—a critical step in app modernization. The work isn’t easy (often it feels insurmountable), but that’s exactly what makes it exciting. It’s why so many engineers choose MongoDB and stay: technical challenges that matter, a culture that empowers, and a team that thrives on collaboration.

Our office may have grown to over 200 people, but it still feels tight-knit. From board game nights to tech meetups and friendships that go beyond work, the sense of community here is unmatched.

One moment stands out: The global launch of Relational Migrator, our flagship migration tool built by our local Aussie team, was announced live in New York in 2023 to thousands of people. The entire team was there running booths, hosting workshops, and seeing firsthand how our work impacts customers worldwide who choose MongoDB’s document model for better performance and scalability.

Rob, an enterprise account executive, remarks that MongoDB has a really unique sales culture.

When I joined MongoDB, it was for the opportunity to work with our largest global customers, solving their most complex challenges and managing mission-critical applications. What keeps me here? No two days are ever the same. The diversity of use cases means every conversation is unique and every solution has an impact.

At MongoDB, we live by our values: support, collaboration, and ambition. Our cross-functional teams go above and beyond to help each other succeed, and we really do build together. The pace is fast, always pushing us to strive for more.

Coming from working in SaaS, I had a lot to learn about developer experiences and modern application challenges. Thanks to incredible support from our solutions architecture team, I’ve built deep technical expertise. Plus, MongoDB’s structured sales process has sharpened my skills in ways no other software company has.

One moment that stands out is when we deployed new fraud and security use cases for a major telco client that helped secure a three-year strategic partnership. That’s the kind of impact you can make here.

While the Sydney office views are pretty spectacular, it’s the people, culture, and opportunities that make MongoDB truly special.

Mick, vice president of engineering, shares the growth he’s experienced and how different perspectives contribute to MongoDB’s success.

Before joining the company, I was seeking a mission-critical product, unique technology, and a truly collaborative environment. MongoDB delivered on all fronts.

MongoDB builds its culture on values that matter: curiosity, collaboration, and ownership. Most importantly, it’s a place where individuality is celebrated and differences make us stronger.

I lead the storage team, a group focused on developing a cutting-edge, open-source storage engine, one of the most critical responsibilities in the database world. The impact? Every feature and improvement touches the foundation of MongoDB’s success.

When I joined MongoDB, I was a director managing 25 engineers. Now, I’m a vice president of engineering leading more than 120 people across ANZ and the U.S. Along the way, I’ve had incredible opportunities to develop my leadership skills and drive global impact.

One of my proudest moments was delivering MongoDB 8.0, what I consider one of the fastest major releases ever. It’s proof that at MongoDB, you don’t just work on software, you shape the future of technology.

On top of this, I’m proud to be an executive sponsor of the Config.mdb employee resource group, which champions neurodiversity within the company and helps foster an environment where everyone can thrive.

Sydney-inspired art adorns the office, from surfboards created by a local artist to our signature mural embodying the vibe of the city.

Tomas, a manager of solutions architecture, admits he initially felt skeptical about joining, but shares how MongoDB’s continuous innovation and customer obsession led to new challenges and opportunities.

With a developer background, I always preferred MongoDB for personal projects. I initially hesitated to join, though, fearing it might feel like a traditional legacy database company. However, seeing the immense value of MongoDB’s data platform and my genuine love for the product convinced me to accept the offer. Nearly four years later, I remain impressed by our continuous innovation and obsession with the developer experience. It’s a ‘never stop learning’ journey here. As the market shifts rapidly from gen AI to RAG and agentic AI, we constantly adapt to new customer architectures, ensuring our work always stays fresh and exciting.

Our Sydney team balances technical passion with customer experience, helping me hone the critical skill of translating business requirements into technical solutions that actually solve problems. Beyond the beautiful harbour views, what makes our office special is the unique cross-functional engagement between engineering, support, and sales—a rarity for a global company of this scale in Australia. I am incredibly proud to have witnessed the region’s growth, seeing our install base expand to trust us with production-critical workloads.
