In 2021, MongoDB made a bold decision to invest in modernizing legacy applications and aid customers migrating from relational databases to MongoDB. That decision sparked the creation of a new R&D team in Sydney—and the chance to tackle some of the most complex engineering challenges in the industry.
Today, that small team has grown into a global department solving multiple novel, high-impact problems. Our team owns MongoDB’s data migration solutions—a critical step in app modernization. Our office may have grown to over 200 people, but it still feels tight-knit. From board game nights to tech meetups and friendships that go beyond work, the sense of community here is unmatched.
One moment stands out: The global launch of Relational Migrator, our flagship migration tool built by our local Aussie team, was announced live in New York in 2023 to thousands of people. The entire team was there running booths, hosting workshops, and seeing firsthand how our work impacts customers worldwide who choose MongoDB’s document model for better performance and scalability.
