THE CHALLENGE
Using MongoDB Atlas offers transparent pricing and powerful monitoring for Hype
With over 1.9 million users, HYPE is the leading Italian fintech and a benchmark in digital money management. Nearly ten years after its launch (2015), its purpose remains unchanged: to simplify the daily management of money through an intuitive, mobile-first experience.
HYPE offers a complete financial ecosystem within a single app, combining payment tools, savings features, credit solutions, insurance services and business functionalities. Its offering is designed to adapt to the evolving needs of individuals, from teenagers to professionals, ensuring accessibility, control, and awareness at every stage of financial life.
Guided by a clear mission and a strong belief in the value of financial education, HYPE removes complexity and fosters an empathetic relationship with financial services. Its model, based on listening, data, and continuous innovation, positions HYPE as a dynamic and inclusive platform that evolves with its users.
HYPE is not just a service, it is a movement that continues to shape the future of banking in Italy.
To support its growing ecosystem, HYPE’s infrastructure chose MongoDB Atlas for its scalable cluster based pricing and powerful monitoring tools. Enterprise-grade features—such as continuous backups and cross-region data replication—were another draw.
“The fact that MongoDB is hosted in different regions is a huge guarantee both for us and for our customers,” says Mattia Rubin, Operations IT Manager at HYPE. “They know that their data is safely replicated even in the event of a complete region failure.”
Overall, MongoDB offered HYPE—a financial institution with zero tolerance for data loss and latency—the resilience, transparency and speed the company needed to power the next chapter of its growth.
OUR SOLUTION
Optimizing infrastructure for speed, security and scale
To support its growing infrastructure and mission-critical services, HYPE adopted MongoDB Atlas as its primary data foundation. The transition began in 2023 with the rollout of HYPE’s redesigned authentication system—one of its most sensitive and high-traffic services. From there, the company quickly expanded MongoDB’s role across its entire backend architecture. MongoDB’s native integration with Microsoft Azure is a key enabler. With a highly segregated, secure cloud setup, HYPE was able to deploy MongoDB Atlas quickly and in compliance with its infrastructure requirements—a move that simplified operational complexity and reduced time-to-implementation.
Today, HYPE runs multiple MongoDB Atlas clusters, each serving different business functions. While the backend is being consolidated into a single cloud region, the databases remain geographically distributed—a deliberate decision to ensure resilience, performance, and regional failover. This architecture supports both high availability and low-latency performance, critical for a fintech that handles millions of transactions. “As a banking institution, we need near-zero data loss, so the backup capabilities—especially continuous backups—are essential,” says Rubin. “On top of that, data is also replicated across multiple regions.”
A key focus area is query performance. Tools like Query Profiler and real-time metrics are now central to optimizing responsiveness and improving API speeds—directly enhancing the user experience. MongoDB’s architecture also allows for smoother scalability, letting HYPE grow its infrastructure in line with user demand without introducing bottlenecks. MongoDB also powers Hype’s fraud detection engine—another essential system for customer trust. With MongoDB Atlas as the backend, HYPE can deliver real-time fraud monitoring with high availability and speed.
With enterprise-level support, HYPE benefits from 24/7 incident response and a dedicated solution architect who works closely with internal teams to fine-tune configurations and enforce best practices. Meanwhile, MongoDB Professional Services continues to support the team as HYPE’s engineering function scales.
“MongoDB Atlas is more than just a database—it’s a full platform. It gives us access to built-in services that we previously had to design or customize ourselves, which is a big win,” says Rubin. “And with its native scalability, we can grow seamlessly alongside our user base and traffic.”
